Prepare surfaces by abrasive blasting (advanced)


Application

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to perform, at an advanced level of skill, surface preparation using abrasive blasting.

The operation and maintenance of compressed air systems and associated items, including emergency shutdown procedures is included.

Where the interpretation of technical drawings is required unit MEM09002 Interpret technical drawing should also be selected.

Where the selection and use of engineering measurement is required unit MEM12023 Perform engineering measurements should also be selected.

Where the selection and use of tools is required unit MEM18001 Use hand tools and unit MEM18002 Use power tools/hand held operations, as appropriate should also be selected.

Assemble, set up and correctly and safely prepare appropriate equipment and any required consumables in accordance with manufacturers' specifications and workplace procedures

Select correct rust inhibitor to reduce corrosion for use in wet abrasive blast methods, where required

Carry out pre-operational checks on equipment, rectify faults or report for further action

Inspect surface prior to cleaning

Inspect work piece prior to cleaning in accordance with procedures

Report identified faults/defects requiring remedial or pre-treatment action, as required

Prepare surfaces using abrasive blasting

Operate blasting equipment in accordance procedures

Undertake emergency shutdown procedures, as required

Undertake work to meet environmental requirements

Carry out abrasive media disposal in accordance with environmental requirements and procedures

Disassemble, clean and inspect blasting equipment in accordance with manufacturers' specifications
